"And We're Off!"

Yes, we're off to a great start to a very busy year! As you are probably aware...we have fully implemented our regular first grade curriculum, which is keeping us thoroughly busy throughout the day.  Take a look at all we've been learning under Academic Updates on the right of the blog. At the end of the day, these children know that they have put in a full day of  working hard and have experienced many  adventures in learning. I am hopeful that you've had a chance to review with your student the work coming home these past few weeks, for it is so important to them that you recognize and acknowledge their hard work and accomplishments.  You are the biggest influence in their young lives right now, and they are most eager to please you:)

Fun with Mr.B The kids absolutely love it when Mr. B visits our classroom to share his stories with us! He has many, many years of experience, being a former teacher at Academy.  Since he retired last year, Mr. B graciously volunteers his time to read us many stories when he visits which is a couple of times per month.

Book Bags have been going home.   Most all of the students are bringing them back the next day, with their reading log initialed by a parent indicating they have read!!!!:)   That is wonderful and important news! The books your children bring  home are books that they have already read in the classroom, or ones that they can read on their own.   They should read each book a couple of times out loud to build fluency.  If they get stuck on a word, you can suggest they look at how the word begins, or ask ..."can you tap it out", or lastly, have them look at the  picture. After they've tried these strategies, and if they still can't read the word, feel free to tell them the word.

Sharing a book with a Big Buddy Friend.  Mr. Hoard's 6th grade class is our "buddy class" this year.  Together we'll be sharing many learning adventures like reading books on computers, Sumdog (computerized math site) , chess & checkers, and other activities throughout the year.
